Planting Guidelines

Your card is printed on biodegradable seed paper that grows wildflowers — just plant, water, and grow!

STEP 1: PREPARE YOUR POT

Fill your pot 2/3 full with good potting soil — firmly full, but not packed. we recommend placing the pot indoors in a bright, sunny spot that isn't too cold. Keeping the seed paper inside keeps your outside environment protected.

STEP 2: PLANT YOUR PAPER

Take your plantable paper and place it on the soil in your pot. if you have room you can lay the whole card flat. If not, you can tear it in half or into smaller pieces to fit the space (Note: It's okay if the paper overlaps!).

STEP 3: COVER + WATER

Spread a 1/8 inch layer of soil over the top of the the paper and gently press down. After planting, give your pot a good soak. You want the paper and the soil to be damp, but not swimming in water. Keep the paper moist until sprouts appear (generally within 10-14 days!).

NOTE: The most eco-friendly way to enjoy your flowers is to plant your card in a pot indoors. While the seeds in our paper are USDA and CFIA approved, tested for noxious weeds, and considered generally non-invasive, every region has its own local regulations and ecological concerns — please check your local regulations before planting outdoors and respect any restrictions in your area!

FAQS

WHAT KIND OF FLOWERS ARE THEY?

Our seed paper includes Clarkia unguiculata (elegant clarkia) seeds. This is a showy annual wildflower that grows about 1–3 feet tall with slender stems and narrow leaves. It’s loved for its bright blooms and for attracting pollinators!

  • HOW LONG WILL THEY TAKE TO GROW?

Sprouts will generally appear within 10-14 days (as long as they are kept moist and in a sunny spot!). you can expect blooming flowers in about 12-14 weeks.

  • WHERE ARE THE SEEDS NATIVE TO?

Clarkia unguiculata is native to California and areas of Baja California, Mexico. The seeds in our paper are USA grown. Additional questions/concerns about the seeds in your cards? Shoot us an email at: hello@thougthfulhuman.co.

  • ARE THEY NON-GMO? WHAT ABOUT INVASIVE SPECIES?

Yes the seeds are non-GMO. Clarkia unguiculata is listed as Native Status L48 N by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), meaning it naturally occurs in the Lower 48 states. The seeds meet government-monitored requirements and are tested for purity to ensure they are free from noxious weeds. However, we advise all recipients check their region's local restrictions prior to planting outdoors to confirm they do not pose any risk to the local environment.

  • WHAT IS THE PAPER MADE FROM?

The seed paper is handmade from recycled paper. Each sheet is pressed and dried using special processes that protect the seeds and support strong germination.

  • WHAT KIND OF INK IS USED?

Only water-based ink that are free from toxic and reactive chemistries are used. They are safe for people and the environment.

  • WHAT KIND OF WRITING UTENSIL SHOULD I USE? WILL THIS IMPACT THE SOIL/FLOWERS?

You can use any writing utensil available, but the best results will be from a regular ball point pen. 3rd party lab testing has found no negative impacts to the soil or flowers as a result of the ink printed on the card or ink written in them. happy planting!

  • WHEN SHOULD I PLANT MY CARD? IS THERE AN "EXPIRATION DATE"?

For best results, we recommend planting within 2 years of purchase and storing in a cool, dry place until planting.

  • WHAT ABOUT MY PETS? IS MY PLANT SAFE FOR THEM TO BE AROUND?

Treating the plant from your card like other house plants that you don’t want pets to get into is a good rule of thumb. It’s unlikely there would be any effects in the quantity included in a single card, but it’s best to keep out of reach of any curious, furry friends as a precaution!
